How to find the right keywords in a job description

   Mine the requirements section first

   The "requirements" or "what you’ll need" block is where the real keywords live. Highlight every hard skill, tool, platform and certification named there — those are the terms most likely to be in the recruiter’s ATS search.

   Prioritise anything repeated

   If a term shows up in the title, the summary and the requirements, it is core to the role. Repetition is the posting telling you what it will filter on — make sure those words appear on your resume.

   Match the exact wording

   ATS keyword searches are often literal. Write the term the way the posting writes it — "Kubernetes", not "K8s"; "Certified Public Accountant", not just "accountant" — and include both the abbreviation and the full form for certifications.

   Fill gaps from your industry list

   Open the guide for your field on this page. It gives you the common skills, tools and verbs for the role so you can add the ones you genuinely have that the posting assumed but didn’t spell out.

Where to place keywords so they actually count

Keyword mistakes that get resumes filtered out

• Keyword stuffing. Repeating the same terms unnaturally, or pasting a giant keyword block, reads as spam to the human who makes the final call — and adds nothing an ATS rewards.

• Hidden white text. Typing keywords in white so they’re invisible is an old trick that modern ATS parsers still read plainly. When a recruiter opens the file, it looks like deception.

• Claiming skills you can’t back up. A keyword you can’t defend in an interview costs you more than the one you left off. Only list terms your experience actually supports.

• Using only the abbreviation. Write "SEO (search engine optimisation)" and "PMP (Project Management Professional)". If the recruiter searches the long form and you only wrote the short one, you don’t match.

• Sacrificing readability. A person reads the shortlist. Keep sentences natural — a resume that only makes sense to software rarely survives the human review that follows.
